  The Roman theatre in old Amman One of Jerash's streets flanked by columns Below, views in Jerash, the Sea Level sign on the road to the Dead Sea (410 m lower than this sign), a local shepherd leading his flock across the highway. Tomorrow, we take a long drive to Petra, ancient city of the Nabatean civilization, where the buildings are carved into the steep rock faces. Many people are familiar with the ornate building known as The Treasury as historians once believed this to be the building's function. Of course, all Indiana Jones devotees know that the real purpose of this building was as a final resting place for the Holy Grail, left by the crusaders in the care of the Grail Knight. We will keep an eye out for him. Both time and the weather forecast seem to be conspiring against us, so we may not be able to make the 800 stair climb to The Monastery, one of the higher buildings in Petra. Comfortable accommodations

 Here is the lobby of our hotel in the 5th Circle area of Amman. We are just back from an exploratory walk and to get some exercise done after our travel day. Amman is a busy city with thousands of energetic drivers who like to show off that their cars have horns. During our 3 hour plus walk, we saw one (1) traffic light and zero (0) stop signs. While some rain is a possibility this afternoon, the city looks like it does not receive very much precipitation. Having a comfortable hotel is a good idea. Here are a few of the treats we have in our room and another view of the lobby area where afternoon tea is served. We made contact with the rep from our tour agency. We’ll have 8 in our group and will meet up tonight to review tomorrow’s schedule.

Aqaba to Amman - a 4 Hour drive that took 12

Friday, Feb. 21. Departing Wadi Rum yesterday after lunch, we drove south to Aqaba, the only port city in Jordan, situated on the Gulf of Aqaba, a part of the Red Sea. From our hotel room, we could see the hills of Israel across the narrow gulf. After checking into the hotel, we got a map from the concierge and headed out for an exploratory walk, staying along the waterfront for a while, then turning into the old downtown area where we visited the local spice market with all sorts of interesting stores selling whole skinned goats, complete with heads and horns, fresh fish, house wears, and spices. The Lobby at our Aqaba Hotel We spoke for some time with a shopkeeper who had a vast array of spices and herbs on display. Like Salah, he was also a Bedouin and, as is the custom, offered us tea when he found out we were from Canada.
